Watch the Birdy

More preparations for the Stitches and Craft Show.Typically I didn't factor in a sick child, so running a bit behind schedule. But better him sick now than in two weeks!!!!! ( I was slightly panicked when a boy in Charlie's class had come down with chicken pox, but ours seems to be just a bug...fingers crossed.)

Twins and Memories

"Tock" needed a twin for another customer who fancied his colour scheme.
Due to various constraints- ie. lino supply and doily availability , a NON identical twin was made.
So meet "Tuck". If Tock was the the "rebellious son"( as suggested by Michelle) then Tuck is the better behaved brother of the family who loves his Mum!
Memory Drawer
I was having a sticky over at Modish this morning and there was Betty Jo's Memory Drawer in a little feature about "Handmade Spaces:Curious Collectors". Right under Dainty Squids very cool studio shot with that lovely owl clock and Polaroid niceness.

Tea Partay

This weekend it's been all about the Teaparty...."It's Teatime Teapot" and "Grandma's favorite Teacup" brooches by Betty Jo .
My very nice hand knitted dolly Tea Cosy. New from the oppie. When Mr. Betty Jo saw it he said "Errr"!
Gorgeous patchwork tea set by Jodie from RicRac.
Patterns for these will be available from Jodie's stand at the Stitches and Craft Show. I just want the original!!!
Lily attended the Blythe Tea party yesterday and I was lucky enough to witness more Blythe dolls in one room than I think I'll ever see in one lifetime. Although I was not officially on the guest list I managed to escape with a few ladybird cupcakes from the event !
And I was recognized by Michelle from Quilting Mick as I was wearing a Betty Jo Owl. Lily voted Michelle's Blythe as the cutest of the lot!

Cool Cooking

Even though this Eggplant Casserole recipe from a very funky 1972 cook book "Cool Cooking" may be of questionable taste, it is actually very yummy. Maybe Ms. Karen should have had a second helping or two.(click on page to read)This book includes tasty treats from the likes of Janis Ian, The Beach Boys, George Harrison ,the Lennons and The Who to name but a few.
If you have a spare recipe or two send them to Gillian at handmaderecipes@gmail.com to be included in a fund raising Cook Book for the Victorian Bush Fire Appeal.
When I cook I follow the wise words of Owlie..... it makes for a happier household!

Pretty Sweet

A few years ago when Betty Jo was just a wee thing, the first figurative range of brooches I made were butterflies. I sold them at Craft Victoria among other places. Well yesterday all the planets aligned and Voila, a new bunch of Betty Jo butterflies have emerged from their cocoons. The creative process to reach this point was interesting to say the least.
While having a lovely meeting over coffee with Tinnie Girl to nut out some ideas for the Stitches and Craft Show it was suggested that a simpler Betty Jo product should accompany my current ranges of brooches and pendants. Mmm, great idea.
Then later, while at Craft Victoria delivering some stock I was drawn to these gorgeous Butterflies by Lightly. They had been in the "encounter" window installation last month, and were now for sale. This pretty nasturtium saucer butterfly spoke to me, and is now an early birthday present for moi! That led me to reminisce about all the Betty Jo butterflies I'd made and slowly the idea was forming.
On arriving home I found two big packages of vintage lino from the absolutely fabulous Silly Gilly and Dick and Dora. Sent to me from Adelaide and Hobart. Thanks so much.
And my great neighbour had kept some more lino from his renovation of "Fred's house"......it was raining gorgeous lino.So look out Stitches and Craft Show.....I'm on a roll!

Time to Give

I put my head down and finished the Cuckoo Clock for the Bushfire Appeal. So next week it will be heading up to a quite dampish Ballina.
Come on Mother Nature. Sprinkle some of that unwanted rain over the Victorian bush.
Update- Ryn of Little Whippet lost her home which was her crafty headquarters in Flowerdale.
I am a huge fan of Little Whippet and send all my love to her and her family, whippets included.

Give them a "Bacio"

My son came home from prep the other day and I over heard him saying "Bacio". His first Italian word is KISS!I recommend you give all your loved ones a huge bacio, pets included. And a cuddle or two wouldn't go astray.
I am feeling the LOVE!

Every little bit.......

This month is going to be busy and bustling and full of many different emotions.
Yesterday I began the custom made Cuckoo clock for the Clock appeal. It will be travelling up to Ballina for an ex-Melbourne girls Mum. Here's the WIP. Note the little Scotties along the base ( this was a request) I unconsciously used predomitely brown and green lino and buttons and now see how it evokes the tones of the Australian bush.
I always work listening to ABC radio , so I was hearing continuing Bushfire reports all day, some stories bringing a tear, but most spurring you to on to help in what ever way you can.
And a second clock was SOLD Yay! so we'll be making another donation to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal. Thanks to Leah for offering to adopt Tock the Aqua Owl.Today I'm off to drop of some toiletries to 3RRR studios in Brunswick. People will be there from 10-6 accepting and packing up goods to be sent to relief centers around the state.
Lots of crafty goods are up for auction to raise money for bushfire relief over at Handmade Help. Click on the link to the ebay page and make a bid. I have.
Oh and still crazy busy making stock for The Stitches and Craft Show. Exactly one month to go EEK!

Yes, the community has jumped into action and started to give. I received a great email this morning...a lovely girl has ordered the Betty Jo Cuckoo Clock, so right after this I'm heading down to the bank to donate. I'm so happy this has happened so fast.
There is also a new blog called Handmade Help that is listing all the crafty goods to be auctioned on Ebay to raise money for the Bushfire Appeal.

Clock Appeal

If you would like to purchase a Betty Jo clock I am donating the proceeds from it (along with a sum from our family) to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.
Any one of my clock designs can be specially made to order so if you're interested have a look at some of them here. I'm hoping this will be a special way to help and remember those people and animals whose lives and homes have been so devastated by the crazy hellish bushfires burning throughout Victoria.
Cash donations can also be made at most banks, Bunnings and Myers.
NEWS! Georgie Love is donating 10% of sales in February to the appeal. Go on. Buy handmade and you'll be helping as well.
Edit YAY! I have already got a buyer!!!! Thanks Manda xxxx

Owl Clocks

As there has been quite a bit of lino Owl Clock activity going on at my place I felt like showing some alternatives. So meet my cute toy Owl clock. Wind him up and his hands rotate, his eyes move, his wings flap and his hat rocks! All to the sounds of Mary had a Little lamb.
And here are some other Owl clock niceness I like on Flickr.

As I write this I am saddened to hear the devastation caused by the huge bushfires burning in our state. All my thoughts go out to those affected and BIG thankyous to the fire fighters putting in their all to help contain the infernos and save lives.xxxxx

Hot Cats, Cool Lino

This favorite Golden book was discovered yesterday down the back of the book case. I'm glad it was found as it reminds me of my Charlie boy.I can look at it and smile while I miss him at school. Were did those almost six years go?
Our cat Pedro is exactly like a teenage boy (something I've got to look forward to). He basically only shows up for meals, prefers hanging out at his mates house and botting food, and stays out all hours, often slinking in through an open window all scruffy. When he does come home he gives the best cuddles as if to say sorry, I still love you!
My lovely neighbour took this photo of him making himself at home on her Cool vintage kitchen lino. This is where his mate Tiger lives and where I know I'll find him.
This is Pedro Puss the lino cat. Named after you know who!

It's Time for School

I'll have butterflies in my stomach this week. The kind Mums get when their kids are taking big leaps forward and you are hoping things go well. The big girl is starting a brand new High School, and for a 14 yo, it is a huge deal. The 5 yo started primary school today and my conflicting emotions swung from uncertainty to relief then to happiness!Right. Now the kids are in school I can be one of those ladies who have all this wonderful leisure time on their hands. Lets see, maybe get a facial, join Fernwood, go out to lunch with a bottle of Chardy?.......... Yeh Right!
It's back into the studio for me. I've got clocks to make. But that's how I like it. Busy, Busy, Busy....takes my mind off the butterflies.

The Stitches and Craft Show

Things are getting very exciting over here at Betty Jo HQ, as we count down the days, just six weeks out from The Stitches & Craft Show in Melbourne.

Yes! Betty Jo Designs will be Exhibiting.......@#%@&*!

At the moment I am manning the PANIC station, but trusting it will be all good by March 11th. Check in every so often and I'll be updating the progress/ preparations for this event. It's sounds like it will be bigger than Texas!
